OverviewThe Staghorn Hard Coral (Acropora sp.) is one of the most iconic and sought-after small-polyp stony (SPS) corals, admired for its branching, tree-like structure and brilliant colouration ranging from deep blues and purples to vibrant greens, pinks, and yellows. Its intricate growth patterns provide both beauty and habitat for reef fish and invertebrates. Acropora corals are fast-growing and can form impressive colonies under the right conditions. While they are sensitive to water chemistry and flow changes, experienced aquarists are rewarded with one of the most stunning and dynamic centerpiece corals in the hobby.
OriginNative to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Great Barrier Reef, Coral Sea, Fiji, Tonga, Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands, as well as parts of the Red Sea and Central Pacific. In the wild, Acropora species dominate shallow reef crests and slopes, where light and water movement are both strong.
FeedingThe Staghorn Coral is primarily photosynthetic, relying on zooxanthellae for energy. However, it also benefits from the absorption of dissolved nutrients and occasional micro-feeding. Feed 1–2 times per week with:
- Marine snow or microplankton
- Phytoplankton and bacterioplankton supplements
- Fine powdered SPS coral foods
Moderate flow during feeding helps deliver nutrients evenly to polyps.
LightingHigh lighting.Acropora requires strong, stable illumination from LED, T5, or metal halide systems.
- PAR range: 250–450 ¬µmol/m¬≤/s
- Gradual acclimation to high light levels prevents bleaching.
- Blue and actinic spectrums enhance pigmentation and fluorescence, especially in blue, teal, and pink morphs.
Strong, turbulent flow. Provide alternating, randomised currents using wavemakers or gyres to replicate natural reef turbulence. Good flow is essential for nutrient exchange, polyp extension, and to prevent detritus accumulation on branches.
Placement- Position on the upper rockwork or reef crest areas, where it receives intense light and vigorous flow.
- Leave 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) of space from other corals — Acropora can grow quickly and overshadow slower species.
- Ensure rockwork is secure, as colonies can become top-heavy as they expand.
Reef safe. Compatible with:
- Peaceful reef fish (tangs, wrasses, gobies, anthias, etc.)
- Snails, shrimp, and small hermit crabs
- Other SPS corals (Montipora, Stylophora, Pocillopora) with adequate spacing
Avoid:
- Aggressive LPS corals (e.g., Euphyllia, Galaxea, Hydnophora)
- Large angelfish, butterflyfish, or puffers that may nip coral tips
Peaceful.Acropora does not possess strong stinging tentacles but can overgrow or shade nearby corals due to its rapid growth. Maintain spacing to allow proper light and flow.
Experience LevelAdvanced. The Staghorn Coral requires stable parameters, strong lighting, and clean, nutrient-controlled water. It’s best suited for experienced aquarists maintaining mature reef systems with consistent monitoring and dosing.
Water Parameters- Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG
- Alkalinity (dKH): 8–10
- Calcium: 420–450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
- Nitrate: <5 ppm
- Phosphate: <0.03 ppm
- Tank Size: Minimum 200 litres (50 gallons) for small colonies; larger systems preferred for stability and flow
Stable alkalinity and calcium are crucial for skeletal growth and maintaining the coral’s vivid colouration. Consistent trace element supplementation (iodine, strontium, and iron) supports long-term vitality.
Reef CompatibilityFully reef safe. The Staghorn Hard Coral is a spectacular centrepiece for SPS-dominant reef aquariums. Its branching structure adds height, texture, and movement to the aquascape, while its bold colours and rapid growth make it one of the most impressive species for seasoned reef keepers.
Interesting Fact
Acropora species are among the fastest-growing reef-building corals, capable of adding up to 10–20 cm (4–8 inches) of new growth per year in optimal conditions. Their skeletons form the foundation for entire reef ecosystems in the wild.
